Sciatica is a common condition that causes pain starting from the lower back and traveling down to the buttock and leg. It can be mild and irritating, or severe enough to affect walking, sitting, and daily activities.
At Dr Niteesh Kumar’s Physiotherapy Chiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic, we focus on identifying the root cause of sciatica and providing effective, non-surgical treatment for long-term relief.
Spinal misalignment occurs when the bones of the spine are not properly aligned in their natural position.
This can happen due to poor posture, injury, prolonged sitting, or muscle imbalance.
Misalignment may put extra pressure on joints, discs, and nearby nerves.
Symptoms can include back pain, neck pain, stiffness, or radiating leg pain.
Muscle spasm, especially in the piriformis muscle, can cause pain in the lower back and buttock.
Piriformis syndrome occurs when this muscle tightens or spasms and irritates the sciatic nerve.
This may cause buttock pain that can travel down the leg, similar to sciatica.
Prolonged sitting, overuse, or sudden strain are common causes.
Disc bulge or slipped disc is one of the most common causes of sciatica.
It happens when the soft cushion between the spinal bones pushes outward and presses on the sciatic nerve.
This pressure can cause lower back pain that travels down the buttock and leg.
You may also feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg.
Prolonged sitting and poor posture can increase pressure on the lower back and spinal discs.
Sitting for long hours, especially in a slouched position, strains the spine and surrounding muscles.
Over time, this may irritate the sciatic nerve and cause back or leg pain.
Lack of movement also weakens core muscles that support the spine.
Lumbar stenosis is a condition where the spinal canal in the lower back becomes narrow.
This narrowing can put pressure on the spinal nerves.
It commonly occurs due to age-related changes like disc degeneration and arthritis.
Symptoms may include lower back pain, leg pain, numbness, or heaviness while walking.
Heavy lifting injuries occur when lifting objects incorrectly or beyond your capacity.
Sudden bending or twisting while lifting can strain the back muscles and spinal discs.
This may cause sharp lower back pain or even trigger sciatica.
Poor technique and weak core muscles increase the risk of injury.

Yes, most cases of sciatica improve with physiotherapy, posture correction, strengthening exercises, and non-surgical treatments. Surgery is required only in severe cases.
Sciatica pain usually starts in the lower back and travels down the buttock to the leg. It may feel sharp, burning, or shooting and can be associated with numbness or tingling.
You should seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or worsening symptoms.
